do you work only in one layer?

actually i work on many layers but after that i merge it. In the end there're only (probably) 4-5 layers left...

1. The background
2. The foreground (in this case the character)
3. The detailling (texture,etc)
4. The effect (such as smoke, secondary lighting,etc.)
